Preserving the People, Systems, and Scale Behind Stadium Rock

The World Series of Rock concerts held at Cleveland Municipal Stadium during the 1970s became legendary not only for the artists who performed, but for the sheer scale and evolution of live concert production taking place behind the scenes.

Presented here are rare photographs documenting the 1974 and 1975 World Series of Rock events, including wide views of the stadium environment, early large-scale PA systems, FOH positions, backstage perspectives, and candid moments capturing the atmosphere of an era when companies like Showco were helping redefine live sound reinforcement for massive outdoor audiences.

Particularly significant within this collection are several images showing familiar Showco staff members working front of house alongside the company’s recognizable yellow mixing consoles and crew jackets — rare visual documentation of the people and technology operating behind some of the largest concert productions of the decade.

These photographs were generously shared with the Showco Archives by Ed Beecher from his late uncle’s personal collection. According to Ed, the images were taken by photographer Ted Nyerges and sourced from original 35mm slides.

As with many contributions preserved within the archives, these photographs survived not through corporate preservation efforts, but because individuals recognized their importance and cared enough to save them for future generations.

The Showco Archives remains dedicated to preserving the often-overlooked history of live sound, touring crews, backstage culture, production technology, and “The Family Behind the Music.”
