Angus Wynne III — Soul City, Texas IPOP, and the Roots of Showco
Angus Gilchrist Wynne III was a Dallas-based music promoter, entertainment entrepreneur, and producer who helped shape the Texas concert scene from the late 1960s onward. A longtime friend and collaborator of Jack Calmes, Wynne began promoting concerts while in college (Wynne at UT, Calmes at SMU). What started as campus events quickly grew into a serious operation: after early successes promoting large Texas–OU bashes and other major parties, they opened a booking and promoting office in the Quadrangle and named their venture Showco—laying groundwork that would later connect to the company’s legendary place in touring history.
In 1967, Wynne and Calmes opened the Soul City nightclub on Greenville Avenue near Mockingbird. The club became a standout in Dallas nightlife, bringing in national acts including Stevie Wonder, Jackie Wilson, Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, and Ike & Tina Turner. Though Soul City earned an outsized reputation for its energy and bookings, it ultimately proved more memorable than profitable, and they sold out in 1968.
Wynne went on to organize the 1969 Texas International Pop Festival (Texas IPOP) in Lewisville—one of the landmark music events of its era, held shortly after Woodstock. After attending Woodstock and noting the logistical issues, he and Calmes aimed to build a stronger model in Texas, booking major artists and taking smart (and sometimes risky) chances on emerging acts. The festival became historic, even though it ultimately lost money—bringing the original Showco promoting venture to a close. Wynne later shifted into real estate, while Calmes went on to revive Showco and help grow it into the sound and lighting force it became.
Angus also appeared in films including True Stories (1986), Talk Radio (1988), and JFK (1991). He came from a prominent North Texas family, including his father Angus G. Wynne Jr. (Six Flags Over Texas) and his brother Shannon Wynne (Dallas restaurateur). Now retired and living in Dallas, Angus still gets out to music events and remains a familiar face in the community.
