Craig “Chief” Schertz
Craig “Chief” Schertz was a legendary SHOWCO Sound Engineer (1974–1989) and one of the names people still bring up when they talk about the golden era of live sound. Best known for his long-running work at Front of House with Genesis and Phil Collins during their peak touring years, Chief had that rare mix of technical mastery and calm authority that made massive shows feel effortless. He was also closely associated with the pioneering SHOWCO systems of the era—including the Prism—helping shape the sound of stadium rock as it was being invented in real time.
Chief’s credits also include work with artists like ZZ Top, REO Speedwagon, and Thin Lizzy, but what always stands out is how personal those relationships became. Phil and the band were dear friends to Chief and his family—connections that went beyond the stage and the mix position.
If you’ve got a Chief story, a photo, or a memory from the road, please reach out—I’d love to add it here so his piece of the SHOWCO history stays on the record.
