The Carpenters & Showco:

On the Road with Karen and Richard

During the 1970s, Showco helped bring the unmistakable sound of Karen and Richard Carpenter to audiences around the world. While The Carpenters were celebrated for the warmth and precision of their recordings, reproducing that signature sound in concert required an equally precise touring operation. Showco supplied the sound systems, technical expertise, and road support behind many of their live performances during the height of their career.

The connection between The Carpenters and Showco also became deeply personal through Showco’s David Alley. In 1974, David left Dallas for Los Angeles after Karen Carpenter helped him secure a position as tour manager for the group—a role he held through 1981. During those years, David and Karen also shared a romantic relationship, adding a meaningful personal chapter to a professional association that extended well beyond the road. David later served as personal manager to The Carpenters and continued working with Richard Carpenter before eventually returning to Dallas and rejoining Showco and Vari-Lite.

This collection preserves photographs, slides, memorabilia, and memories from the years when The Carpenters’ music, Showco’s touring innovation, and the lives of the people behind both became closely intertwined.
